Vietnam Visa Runs: Plan Your Exit and Re-Entry with Confidence

A land-border trip can be part of a longer-stay plan. Understand the documents, timing and re-entry checks before you leave Vietnam.

A visa run is a trip out of Vietnam followed by a new entry, often through a land border with a neighbouring country. Travellers sometimes use the term “visa extension” for this arrangement, but it is a fresh immigration journey: it does not extend or reset the visa you already hold.

Who might consider a visa run?

This option may suit travellers who want to stay longer and need a new basis for entry. For e-visa customers using Le Travel's longer-stay service, exit and re-entry is the route we assess rather than directly extending the existing e-visa. Other lawful options may exist for people eligible for a sponsored visa or residence status.

What happens on a land-border trip?

  1. Review the plan before departure. We check your current stay, intended exit date, nationality and proposed border crossing.
  2. Confirm entry to the neighbouring country. You must satisfy that country's entry requirements, including any visa needed. A Vietnam visa does not grant access to another country.
  3. Leave Vietnam lawfully. Complete Vietnamese exit procedures before your permission to stay expires, then complete the neighbouring country's entry formalities.
  4. Prepare for the return. Re-enter only when you hold valid permission for the new entry and the intended checkpoint is accepted. A new e-visa application must meet the official requirement that the applicant be outside Vietnam.
  5. Check the new admission. After re-entry, review the permitted stay recorded by immigration and keep your travel documents together.

Allow enough time outside Vietnam

Do not assume you can cross the border and return immediately. Application processing, border operating hours and entry checks can change the itinerary. Leaving and returning on an existing multiple-entry e-visa does not extend its expiry date.

Le Travel can review your documents and help coordinate a practical plan, including transport enquiries where available. If your return is time-sensitive, read about urgent visa processing; we will confirm whether expedited handling is possible before you rely on it.
